One of the most common questions I get is "How many visits is this going to take?" Since I wasn't Nostradamus in a previous life(joke) I can't predict the future. With that in mind here is the thought process I have to go through to come up with a treatment plan.
1. How serious is the injury/ ailment?
Sprain, strain, tear, fracture, cramp, food allergy, food sensitivity, diabetes, obesity, etc
2. How many co-existing conditions exist?
Sprain+food intolerance+obesity, strain+food sensitivity, strain+obesity+diabetes, etc
3. How healthy is this person?
40 lbs overweight+BP 170/90+ metabolic syndrome, sprained an ankle on their routine 5 Km run
4. What age is this person?
4 months, 5 years, 30, 60 , 85
5. What activity level does this person enjoy?
walks 5 km 4x/week, runs 15 miles/day, a pro rugby player, a couch potato
6. How well do they eat?
Standard american diet(SAD), 100% raw paleo, exclusively fast food
7. How often do I have to see this person to keep them feeling 100% in the long term?
monthly, quarterly, semiannually
These are just some of the variables I have to consider when thinking of the right treatment plan for each patient. Ultimately my goal is to get you feeling better as quickly as possible, with as much time between visits while still feeling at 100%.
"Why do I want to see you ongoing every one, three, or six months once your initial complaints have subsided?"(as it usually works out with most patients)
We only get one body in this life. We can buy as many cars as we want in our lifetime; 10 cars, 500 cars, 10,000 cars. As many as you want! Yet we still take them in for maintenance every 6 months. We still change the oil every 10,000 miles, use premium unleaded gasoline, and treat them like our babies. Because we know preventative maintenance is good for our cars and we will spend hundreds or even thousands on preventing breakdowns because they are so important to us. After all, we can only buy as many cars as we want, an unlimited amount! But spending $200-300- or even $400/year on preventing breakdowns in your ONE body often times is thought of as ludicrous.
